Learning Agreement

Learning Agreement

Name: Aisling Crosland
Course: BA Illustration
Level: 6
Unit: PMP
Credit Points: 20
Study Hours: 200
Tutor(s): Joel Lardner

Synopsis of Study:

For this unit I intend to complete the open brief for the Macmillan Prize 2014. This will involve me creating my own narrative aimed at children, keeping in mind narrative theories I have looked into over my previous units on the course. I will need to demonstrate my grasp of narrative, pacing and characterisation, as well as showing my ability to match pictures to text. I will produce roughs for a children’s book – cover to cover – including text or a clear indication of the story line as outlined in the brief set by the Macmillan Prize and this will be roughly 32 pages long including the front and back end papers, a title page and a copyright page. I will also produce four completed double page spreads for the book and a cover, which will be printed out to be presented as a final outcome. I have decided to enter the Macmillan Prize because I have found over the units in Level 5 that this is the area in which I am most interested in working after university. The units which I enjoyed the most and as a result of this got the best marks in over level 5 where the units in which I created my own narratives that resulted in either a completed book or an animation for the final outcome. I particularly enjoy creating my own narratives and as a result of this have found that I enjoy creating my own character designs. I also thought it would be useful to me to work with creating picture books as this is something I personally find interesting and will be looking into through my investigative study. I wanted to do something that would be able to hold my interest over the course of the PMP unit and inform my investigative study with opportunity to influence my final major project after Christmas. I will be taking into account what I have learnt previously when producing work aimed at a child audience in terms of drawing techniques combined with working digitally to produce a visually appealing outcome. I will also be conscious when producing my final double page spreads to avoid putting important details within 5mm of the edge of the page, or where the illustration crosses the spine otherwise known as guttering. I will demonstrate through my roughs that thought has been put in when it comes to being aware of story space and where the accompanying text would fit onto the page.  The roughs of the book along with the 4 completed spreads should be able to show that my book is meant to be for young children, to provide light relief like a bed time story but also have an underlying moral to do with a common worry among young children. I wanted to focus on the theme of moving home as this can be something that is scary for many young children but my story will end in a state where equilibrium is returned in order to show that change might seem scary at first but it doesn’t have to be scary at all.

A3    To consolidate your ability to respond to the inter-relationship between theory and practice. evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:

LO1    Demonstrate the ability to develop a sustained piece of independent creative work.

LO3    Demonstrate your ability to develop creative work which responds to theoretical issues and questions.

Assessment Requirements:

For assessment I will produce roughs of a picture book from cover-to-cover 32 pages long and finished artwork for 4 double page spreads and a front cover realised from the roughs. I will also submit sketchbooks demonstrating my journey throughout this unit including research into children’s picture books and a demonstration of understanding of matching pictures to text.
